What is Safety First? Safety First Racing is a motorcycle racing and safety services company committed to saving children’s lives by helping to educate children, their families and local communities on the preventable injuries associated with bicycling. Frequently asked questions about the Safety First Program include:
- Q: How long has the Safety First program existed? A: The “Safety First” program was developed in 2002 to focus on promoting proper bicycle helmet use and bicycling safety to children.
- Q: How much influence has the Safety First program had? A: To date, the program has impacted over 10,000 children through presentations at grade schools, malls and youth camps.
- Q: Where are Safety First presentations conducted? A: Presentations are conducted nationwide while traveling for the AMA Superbike motorcycle roadracing series from March through September. This allows Kevin to address the need for helmet usage during the summer months, when preventable injuries are at their highest.
- Q: What makes the Safety First program so unique? A: By presenting a celebrity and “hero” image to kids as a police officer and a professional motorcycle racer, Officer Kevin Hanson uses visual aids and real life stories to have a clear and influential impact on the children’s impressionable minds, to allow for development of positive lifelong habits.
- Q: What children’s ages does the program target? A: The program targets children 7–12 years of age while they are at their formative stages and are still impressionable to allow for development of positive lifelong habits.
- Q: What does the Safety First presentation consist of? A: As part of each “Safety First” presentation, Kevin Hanson highlights the importance of proper safety gear for riding bicycles and motorcycles. Bicycle helmet safety is especially stressed, along with the importance of pre-ride checks, following the ‘rules of the road’ and wearing proper bicycling clothes and protective gear. In addition, both visual aids and hands-on activities are incorporated to help leave a lasting impression in the children’s minds.
- Q: How can I help? A: You can help by donating to the Safety First program. Every $10 donated to the Safety First program provides a new Bell bicycle helmet for a child in need.
- Q: How can I request more information about the program? A: If you are interested in learning more about the Safety First program or his school presentation series, please contact Kevin via email kevin at safetyfirstracing dot com.
